DuBiotechhead outlines importance of global benchmarks in life sciences infrastructure for biotech companies
The head of DuBiotech, Dubai’s new free zone dedicated to biotechnology, has outlined the importance of industry-specific regulatory standards and infrastructure required for companies from the biotechnology industry to establish successful operations.
The life sciences sector requires not only specific laboratory designs, but also locations and support infrastructure, including biosafety and waste management support, in order to do business.
“Today, businesses can come to Dubai very easily and start work. However, for specialised businesses that
produce medicines and highly developed life sciences products and services, there is a need to establish
regulatory frameworks based on international best practices and demonstrate world-class standards of hygienic
and sterile environments in the region,” says Dr. Abdulqader Al Khayat, Executive Director of DuBiotech- the
Free Zone dedicated to the biotechnology industry.
“Biotech companies require specific locations in which it’s not only suitable, but also appropriate to conduct their
daily business activities. It’s also natural for biotech companies to congregate within specific science parks, which
contribute towards business partnerships and sharing of industry experience.”
Dr. Al Khayat outlined his views prior to the DUPHAT exhibition, where DuBiotechis exhibiting and demonstrating its capabilities to handle the exacting requirements of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The requirements for the scientific community are very specialised and flourish best within facilities that are “biotech-friendly”.
“While some alternate sites may seem attractive in the short term, it’s important to consider additional unseen costs, such as retrofitting existing buildings to handle biosafety requirements, as well as being sited close to industrial, environmental and noise pollution; all of which could have detrimental consequences on their facilities.”
“We are working closely with the Dubai Municipality and the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS) to ensure that the correct business ecosystem is in place from which our Business Partners can successfully develop their operations,” explains Dr. Al Khayat.
DuBiotechwill be following international standards required to develop state of the art facilities for all sectors of the life sciences industry.
